The longevity of your vinyl plank flooring will depend on the condition how you prepare your sub-flooring. Uneven sub-flooring will cause your newly inserted vinyl planks to wear and rip, wasting valuable time and adding extra costs to your budget.
Take the time to make certain that your sub-flooring is flawless. Putting in the extra time will allow the end results lifelong enjoyment.
Here are a couple of ways to ensure the longevity of your vinyl floors.
Firstly you will need to test the surface’s moisture level. This can be done by taping a square piece of vinyl with duct tape to your subfloor, ensure that the edges are sealed. Leave it for a couple of days and then remove the duct tape. Should the tape release with great ease, your floor is likely too damp for vinyl plank flooring.
Moisture in your sub-floor can be caused by a number of sources. Your floor could not have a effective moisture barrier, causing moisture to leak from ground sources. Other possibilities include excess environmental humidity or plumbing leaks. The cause will have to be determined and addressed before installing your vinyl plank floors as this can jeopardise your installation.
If you have no moisture problems you can move on to the next phase of the process.
Check the smoothness of the surface with a carpenter’s level. If there are any high or low spots, patch the low spots with floor patching and sand the high spots with medium-grid sandpaper.
Clean the floor to remove any debris and dust.
Cut plywood that is 6mm or thicker that fits the entire floor of the room and lay it down without any gaps. Make sure that the plywood joints do not align with the subfloor joints.
Leave a 6mm gap alongside the joints and wall for expansion. You can now tighten the plywood to the subfloor with deck screws about 15cm apart.
Identify any loose edges by stomping on the floor and secure the areas that you find by screwing them to the floor joints. Fill all gaps in your plywood floor and sand down edges to ensure that your sub-floor is as smooth as possible.
The only thing left to do is to clean floor, removing any dust and debris.
